The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

Central Institute of Tool Design (CITD) is a premier Institute in Asia to provide specialized training in tool engineering.  The objective of the Institute is to meet the requirements of the Industries in the field of Tool Design and manufacturing and to train the technical personnel in these fields.  The Institute was established in the year 1968 by the Government of India with assistance of UNDP and ILO.
