Ananthapur District

 

Ananthapur District, located in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, is the largest District of Andhra Pradesh spanning an area of 19,130 Sq.Km.  It is bounded on the North by Kurnool District, on the East by Kadapa District, on the Southeast by Chittoor District, and on the Southwest and West by Karnataka State. Its northern and central portions are a high plateau, generally undulating, with large granite rocks or low hill ranges rising occasionally above its surface.  In the southern portion of the District the surface is more hilly, the plateau there rising to 2600 ft. above the sea level.  Six rivers flow within the District: Penna, Chithravathi, Vedavathi, Papaghni, Swarnamukhi, and Thadakaleru.  Generally a drought prone district, it receives an average annual rainfall of just 381 millimeters.  It is known to be the second driest area in the country, after Jaisalmer District of Rajasthan.

 


 

 

Groundnut is the major crop of the District cultivated in 7.2 lakhs Hectares.  The major food crops are Paddy, Jowar, Bajra, Maize and Millets.  The other crops in the Districts are Mulberry, Sugarcane and Sunflower. In addition to the above, oil seed crops like Sesame, Sunflower, and Castor are cultivated over an area of 2 lakh hectares.

 

Demographics:

The District had a population of 3,640,478 of which 25.26% is urban as of 2001.  It has a literacy rate of 56.69 (State average: 61.5).  Male literacy rate is 68.94, while female literacy rate is only 43.87.  About 75% of the population is rural population.

 

Economy:

Agriculture is the mainstay of the District’s economy.  The District is industrially backward. Silk trade, limestone quarrying, iron and diamond mining constitute the industrial base.

 

Agricultural resources:

Net area sown constitutes 54.66% of District’s area.  Around 72% of the total cropped area is under Groundnut cultivation, making it the highest producer in the State (3.63 lakh tonnes in 2001-02).  Horticulture crops include Groundnut, Maize (Guntakal and Rayadurg).

 

Horticulture produce like Chillies, Coriander-Seed, Lemon, Guava, Citrus, Papaya, Sapota (Tadipatri, Gooty and Pamidi), Pomegranate (Rayadurg and Madakasira), Curry Leaf and Coriander Leaves, Davanam, Kanakambaram flowers, Jasmine(Kadiri), Tamarind, Beetle nut, Citrus, Mango, Papaya, Vegetables  and Tamarind.  Floriculture produce includes Jasmine, Corssandra and Marigold.

 

Around 55000 acres in the District are under mulberry cultivation.  Production of Cocoons is around 19500 MT pa, worth around Rs.1850 lakhs.  Sericulture activity is a major economic activity in the District.

 

Mineral resources:

Major minerals found in the District are Limestone, Granite, Diamond, Gold and Colored Stones.

 

Wind Energy:

Aananthapur District faces high velocity winds that drive away monsoon clouds.  However, this Wind Energy is being harnessed to produce 360 MW of wind energy.  The District is a pioneer in harnessing Wind Energy.

 

Transport Infrastructure:

Ananthapur is well connected by road and rail. The 6-lane super National Highway from Chennai passes through the District. Puttaparthi in the district, is connected by Air.

 

Banking Infrastructure:

Syndicate Bank is the Lead Bank of the District.  The District has 129 rural bank branches, 73 semi urban and 40 rural bank branches of commercial andother banks.  The District has Rs.54.49 crores credit was provided to the Non farm sector (SSI) and Rs.100 crores for the medium sector during 2006-07.  This formed just 4.6% of total credit (Rs.1175 crores) during the year.  Of the Rs.54.49 crores, 5.5 crores were for handlooms, 1.6 crores for tiny sector, 0.5crores for village industries, 10.5 crores for rural artisans and 30.6 crores for Small Scale Industries.

 

Industrial Infrastructure:

Ananthapur District houses Industrial Estates at Ananthapur, Kadiri, Tadipatri, Goody, Sakalapalli and Sajjala Dinne.  One Industrial Development Area is located at Guntakal. Hindupur is a Growth Center.  In all, 652 acres are allotted for these industrial pruposes. Four Mini Industrial Estates are exclusively for SC/ST candidates.

 

Industrial Sector:

The District has 42 Large and Medium Industries with an investment of Rs.676 Crores.

 

Micro and Small enterprises: As in 2006, there were 4694 Small Scale Units in the District, involving an investmentof Rs.122.31 crores and providing employment to 40256 persons.

Industrial / Handicrafts / Handlooms Clusters in the District:

1. Silk Sarees (& Cotton Sarees) Cluster of Dharmavaram.

2. Leather Puppetry of Nimmalakunta.

4. Readymade Garments Cluster of Pamidi and Rayadurg.

 

Institutional Support for Industrial Development:

District Industries Centre, Horticulture, Agriculture, Handlooms, Sericulture Departments of Government of Andhra Pradesh, Oil Technological Research Institute, Banks, RUDSETI (Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute) etc.

 

Industrial Potenital: Criteria for identifying product lines: 

Based on the availability of raw material and market for finished goods, certain product lines have been identified to have scope for establishment of units in the Small Scale Sector.  The availability of raw materials (Agro, Horticulture, Mineral and Leather) has been discussed above.  Important towns in the District provide the necessary infrastructure support like transport, market yards, retail sales etc. Based on these criteria, the following products have been identified for promotion in areas suggested against them (Products were identified based on survey undertaken in 2004.
